Data Ethics is a new thing on the horizon; still more as an academic topic. I am very much interested to see how it unfolds in the next few years. Ethics sounds simple to understand in a generic term but how it transcends into data management/ governance space is the key thread. The scope could be narrowed to Digital Ethics or expanded to AI Ethics.

As per my understanding , It is the data practices i.e. collecting, generating, analyzing and destroying data that have the potential to affect organization or people.

The conversation around Data Ethics should be ongoing, and goes hand in hand with your right to privacy and data privacy laws of your region. People should know what data they own, and what rights they have around that data, such as who is collecting it, who is using it, and how it is being used. I highly encourage everyone to understand more about their data and data governance can deliver this in detail!

Since a lot of businesses are undergoing transformation and they are using AI/ML to build solutions. Data ethics has been gaining momentum in our organization. We are currently in the process of creating policies (mostly guiding principles) on data ethics.

To me data ethics is applying your business ethics to the data. And not violate the trust of the information. Specifics that arise around this today include privacy, mis usage, breaches of information, and not applying data properly. There are laws that support this, but I believe still in its infancy being applied.

Data Ethics is an important part of Data Management Framework in modern enterprises and it will define the processes of handling the data as well as process of converting it into useful insights. Finally Data Ethics is gaining the importance that was long due and is currently one of the hot topics in data world. Thanks to the privacy laws which are making it possible and making an impact on the way companies use to work. One of the the biggest challenege that companies are facing is having multiple versions of same data that is being stored and distributed without any governace across the organisation, and utlimately making it difficult to trace and delete the unwated copies.
Privacy laws has laid the foundational block and we will see the results in near future.

Data Ethics is very important topic of discussion while handling data but I think it’s less talked and even less implemented as organizations are more focused on driving monetary benefits from the data they own and less on how data is being handled!

We’re a pretty new company and haven’t gotten very deep into this topic, but it’s part of our maturity path. Currently we sell our products through distributors but eventually will sell direct to consumers as well. We have teams who are starting to prepare for consumer privacy regulations such as GDPR, CCPA, CPRA, etc. I see this as one part of the equation - it’s mandatory depending on who you want to market to and where - but I think there’s also a voluntary aspect. We need to be thoughtful about what data we collect about our customers, exactly why we’re doing so, how we intend to use it, and how things could go wrong. Aside from simply protecting their PII and complying with the law, what decisions might we make that could adversely impact our customers? If was data was misused in analytics, could it lead to discrimination of any kind? This is probably just the tip of the iceberg so I’d like to start thinking about and designing for this now as we’re building out our customer master data.

If I can quote from this session: “Unethical data management that causes negative impacts on customers will directly affect a business’s reputation.” - still many companies are more concerned with getting caught and this became their main motivator than doing what is wright.

Hi all,

in our company we are doing the maximum regarding GDPR and the rest of the legal requirements.
But we are at the beginning of creating a new organisational structure for data management/data governance.
In front of us are new DATA ACT tasks and we need to be ready. Also, we need to do that more flexibly.
Also AI and ethics is very important part of that.

Data Ethics!, well all countries have their own versions of principles in place to ensure the ethics in terms of data protection, especially when it comes to personal data. For an instance the Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA) which was imposed last June in Thailand mandates that personal data must be collected for “specified, explicit and legitimate purposes” and not further processed in a manner that is incompatible with those purposes. This had most of us revisiting all our use cases to ensure we follow all these regulations. According to PDPA, organizations must obtaining consent from individuals for the use their personal data, being transparent about the purposes for which the personal data will be used, and allowing individuals to acknowledge the purpose and usage to which they consent.

Data Ethics has become a trending topic now and with ample amount of data in the world now, it is utmost important to maintain Data Ethics. In my opinion, data ethics is more of responsible management of data with due diligency kept towards privacy and security of the same.

IMHO, if we talk about Data Ethics, we are talking about first about an organization with data citizen culture embedded inside each area and how the company employee awareness process in the right manner the usage of the personal data, financial, etc. always based on countries regulations to avoid monetary sanction (PII, GDPR, etc)
