Product Versioning

Hi,

My employer is in a heavily regulated industry and one of the regulators is asking for the version of the software and how it differentiates between a major and minor release (we are using Data Intelligence Cloud). I’ve made notes re the product road map but need to be able to explain how your ‘version control’ works?

With traditional installed software we may have, for example, version 1.4 and the regulator would only be interested if we went to v2.0 and not the ‘minor’ updates i.e. 1.5, 1.6 etc. is there something similar in Intelligence Cloud?

Version 5.0 was announced in October 2016 ( Collibra 5.0 & Collibra Catalog Help Users Find, Understand, & Trust Data)
Version 5.7 was released in October 2019

As @alvin.useree.lloydsbanking.com was mentioning, Collibra has switched to a regular release schema, which means no major releases, but lots of minor releases.

But what do version even mean? Let’s take the example of Firefox vs Chrome. It took Firefox nearly 10 years to get to version 6, then suddently enters Chrome with a release schedule favoring major increases. For marketing purposes, Firefox decided to change the versioning, and we got from version 6 to version 89 since then…

In the last year or so, Collibra have transitioned away from big bang software releases and now cater to incremental releases (these are monthly releases e.g. 2021.05, 2021.06). Generally, these releases point to new functionality however, there have been releases that have overhauled existing capability. In these cases, Collibra generally leaves the old capability functional for a few months so clients can get their user base to gradually adopt what’s been changed.

Usually just before upgrading, CloudOps takes a full backup of your instance as well. You also have the option to opt out of an upgrade where necessary.
