Asset Best Practice Documenting
Has anyone added a “best practice” section within their data dictionary? Specifically for a BI data dictionary. We are looking to add details of best practice queries based on table assets.
For now we have embedded a pdf to the table asset “information” tab. We are thinking that we will add an attribute within the table asset specific to best practice.
Has anyone done anything like this? If so, how?

·5 years ago · EditedYou could use the Standard asset or create a new asset similar to Standard but called Best Practice. Either option would be good, but I would build it as a governance asset vs. a business asset. A governance asset usually tells you what you can/cannot do based on formal rules. Business assets are generally for documentation, classification, and other business-related functions.

Usually, consumers search for an asset and read through the all the documentation associated with it. Isn’t it? Then, why not put up all information around best practices in the description attribute or a custom attribute for a particular asset? That could make things more simpler.
If I understand correctly, new asset of “Governance” type would show up in lineage only?

·5 years ago · EditedYou should have governance assets enabled but the admin might have removed the rights to that part of the product. If you don’t see policy manager as a product area then you don’t have rights to it or the assets that are related to the product. Check with your admin to see if you can use those assets.

·5 years ago · EditedI don’t know if I was add Best Practices as an attribute because you might repeat the same values for multiple assets. You might create a Best Practices asset and link them to other assets that share a common best practice. There isn’t a right or wrong way to do this.

OP5 years ago · EditedI agree with this, there’ll almost always be Best Practices you can map to multiple Assets so this is best held as it’s own asset type.
But perhaps a “How to Use To Use This Asset” type use case would work best as an attribute.
I really like the idea of having a separate Asset type for Best Practices too as you could also package that asset under a Dataset to drive value at consumption.
