Best practices for survey data and governance

Hi fellow citizens,

Does your team do data governance for survey data?

At Brigham Young University, we have been using Collibra for about 7 years now and have governance around relational databases, virtual databases, REST web services, SAML Single-Sign-On, and system events (e.g. Syslog). Each type of data has a slightly different data model for storing the meta-data and relationships.

Our Office of Institutional Assessment does a lot of surveys. Today, they keep track of the questions asked and the potential responses in a .pdf file printed from Qualtrics. We would like to explore using Collibra to store this data so that we can extend our data stewardship model and data request model to cover survey data.

If you track survey meta-data and have lessoned learned about storing this data in Collibra, we would be interested in hearing from you about how you do it. Let’s collaborate!

I know this is an old post but I am just now seeing it. If your IR group follows standard social science procedure, then they should create a data dictionary in the software they pull the Qualtrics data into. That would most likely be SPSS unless you have economics trained IR staff, then it would be STATA. There you have the questions pulled into the software and the variables they are assigned as and potentially combined into composite scores.

Unless, this is a small staff and they only provide the frequency tables as output and no further analysis than what Qualtrics provides. Then you may have to balance not tracking it in Collibra if it is not used as data for analysis but only stored in Qualtrics. If that is the case, I would instead put it in Collibra as a tech asset and maybe attach some Data Concepts to it but not give it too much more.

No direct experience per se with Collibra, but a similar use case in life sciences is the CRF (Case Report Form), which are highly standardized questionnaires used in clinical trials. There are industry standards, like CDISC who formalize good practices to capture and approve the metadata related to those questionnaires (questions, type of answers, how they relate to the collection data model, etc.)
You might find some inspiration from this use case.
We do not manage CRF metadata in Collibra, as there are specialized industry software that are better suited for the job.
