Workflow for approver to clarify from requestor

Is there a way for approvers, etc to respond and ask clarifications from the workflow submitter and continue the workflow without rejecting and starting a new workflow task?

I would suggest customizing the pre-existing workflows according to your specific needs. Nevertheless, for faster responses and clarifications, I would recommend utilizing alternative communication methods to avoid workflows instances running for a longer period of time.
